Question by JustWondering: Dad is dating a woman w/ IRS & credit card debt, no assets. When in CA can he potentially become responsible?
We all live in California. Dad is in his 70′s and seeing a woman in her mid-60′s. He really likes her, their relationship is really good. He wants her to move in. We (the kids) fear that he may unintentionally become responsible for her debt. Can that happen? Does he need to be careful? Again, she has no assets (no savings, no house), just credit card debt and IRS debt. She seems honest and sincere and is not going after his money. If she moves in, does that make her a ‘partner’? I heard California has some sort of Common Law?
