These companies are in business to make money, and they do it by their fees from you. I am a big believer in that anything they can do, so can I. Now, it is true that they can negotiate a smaller payment or a lesser rate of interest with credit cards, but by the time you add in their fees, it adds up to much the same from your point of view, and it also hurts your credit rating.
There are basically two ways of tackling credit card – or any other debt. Cut down spending and increase income. And it helps to keep a running track of your spending in a notebook to see where the money goes. It helps identify unnecessary spending.
Maximising income would include all the variables such as extra job, babysitting, selling unwanted items at car boot sales or ebay, providing house cleaning/private tuition/child or pet minding/any other service needed in your area, even searching down the backs of chairs or sofas for lost coins.
Cutting down spending means reducing journeys/using what you have instead of buying more/careful water or power use/cutting coupons/text instead of phone calls/packed lunch to work/get rid of Sky or cable TV/read newspapers online or at library/find cheap or free things to do in your local area and dozens of other ways of trimming costs here and there. They all add up.
If you have two credit cards, pay minimum off the one with lowest rate, and as much as you can off the other. Pay off more frequently – once a week with whatever you have saved by not spending. If you wait till the end of the month, it will have frittered away. It will encourage you to see the balance coming down. If you can change one to a new card with a zero per cent rate, use the initial 6-month period to get rid of that debt entirely. The free rate only applies to the transferred balance, not to new purchases, so don’t use the card at all. In fact, better for you to cut out credit card use altogether. When one card is paid off, tackle the other in the same way.
I didn’t have a credit card debt, but I paid off a mortgage 12 years early by nibbling constantly at it. Make your debt reduction a challenge, and you can do it too.
Its true that there have been companies advertising this service, however it was expensive.
All those court cases are currently on hold while test cases are made.
You should also be aware that it will affect your credit rating and your relationship with your creditors.
The answer is yes, solicitors have won court cases for individuals. To answer Johnny’s points, some companies can be expensive but the cheapest at the moment I think is ether £275 or £295. There are test cases that, if the judges find against the banks, will open the floodgates for claims against them. It will not affect your credit rating if you win because you cannot default on an agreement that is not legal. I used http://www.bdebtfree.info and was very pleased.
