in Bad credit mortgage lenders

My husband and I are young, and I guess you can say “just starting out in life”. I have great credit but I don’t make that much money. He has bad credit but makes good money. We want to buy a home here in Missiouri before next Spring. I am wondering if all mortgage lenders will tell us that we must put down money.
I have been speaking with one mortgage lender and he said at this point in time we will need to put down at least 3%. We do have money in savings but it is for something else. I talked to my sister who bought a home in Florida a few years ago and she said I better talk to different mortgage lenders because, she thinks differently.
We have too much pride to ask our parents for a couple thousand dollars. So, what do you guys think? What has been your experience lately?
